Tafsir
This is the explanation of Qur’an it is known as Commentary.


Importance of Tafsir in Islam

  1. It helps one to understand fully the meaning of various verses of the Qur’an and their obligations.
  2. A different interpretation and meanings are studied under Tafsir.
  3. Tafsir make defers explanation of the text available.
  4. Confusion and misunderstanding of Intended meaning are eliminated through Tafsir.
  5. It clarify the ambitious verses
  6. It teaches the circumstance and immediate cause of revelation
Origin of Tafsir
Though the Qur’an was revealed in Arabic, the Muslim Arabs and non-Arabs need the Tafsir because Some expression contain in the Qur’an were not known during the pre-Islamic era. 
           In additions, some expressions in the Qur’an which were known have different or peculiar connotations. The Prophet has to explain then by using offer verses of the Qur’an. These is called the Tafsir of the Qur’an by Qur’an itself e.g Suratul Qadr.

           The Prophet also did the Tafsir of the Qur’an. These is contain in the Hadith. For instance, the Qur’an says “and gives one Zakat….” The Prophet mentioned the Items of which Zakat is paid. He also stated how Zakat should be paid on Livestock such as cows, camels etc. for instance, the Prophet said one tenth should be given out on Zakat of farm produce (grain, crop) both that one twentieth is to be given of farm produce if it has grown through irrigation.
           The companions were able to run Tafsir of the Qur’an on the basis of what they heard from the Prophet. They pass the Tafsir orally from one generation to another. Distinguish comments among the companions include Ibn Abbas, Abdullahi Ibn Mas’ud, Aliyu Ibn Abi-Talib, Abayy Ibn KAB, Zayd Ibn Thabiun etc.
           The Tabiun: This means the companions of Prophet Companions (i.e. the generation after the companions). Their role in the Tafsir was that they listen to the Tafsir from the Prophet companion and pass it to the next generation.

Development of Tafsir
Some scholars of Thabi’un move from one place to another in search of the Tafsir of the Qur’an. They travelled wide, these scholars also made use of their knowledge in Arabic Grammar. (Nahiru, Balaga, philosophy logic etc) in the integrating of the Qur’an.
